Heart & Vine Counseling and Wellness
Counseling for children/teens (10+) and adults in Iowa, rooted in faith, brain-based care, and practical skills.
About Adrian Aswegen, LMHC
I’m a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and the founder of Heart & Vine Counseling and Wellness in Iowa. I work with children/teens (10+) and adults, with a special heart for those navigating trauma, big life transitions, identity questions, and faith in the middle of real-life stress.
My approach is grounded in DBT, brain-based education, and a holistic view of mind, body, and spirit. For clients who want it, I can thoughtfully integrate Christian faith into the counseling process; for those who don’t, you’ll still find a warm, nonjudgmental space to be honest about where you are and where you hope to go.

Core Values
About Adrian Aswegen, LMHC
Founder of Heart & Vine Counseling and Wellness
Meet Adrian Aswegen, LMHC
Hi, I’m Adrian Aswegen, LMHC, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and the founder of Heart & Vine Counseling and Wellness in Iowa. I provide individual counseling for children/teens (10+) and adults, with a special passion for walking alongside teens and young adults as they navigate identity, life transitions, trauma, and faith in the middle of real-life stress.
I earned my B.S. in Psychology from Iowa State University in 2017 and my M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Drake University in 2023. Before starting Heart & Vine, I worked in a residential treatment facility for youth ages 10–17, served as a community mental health provider for adults in Polk County, and most recently completed my internship and temp-licensed work at an outpatient counseling office in Pella. Those experiences shaped my heart for people who are doing their best to survive really hard things—often quietly, with more on their shoulders than most people realize.
How I Work
My primary therapy approach is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), with a strong emphasis on grounding and practical coping skills. In our work together, we’ll focus on things like:
Calming your body when your nervous system is on high alert
Organizing racing thoughts so they feel less chaotic
Riding out big waves of emotion without shutting down or blowing up
Building skills you can actually use at school, work, or home
I’m especially passionate about walking with people who have experienced trauma—whether it’s something that happened in the past or ongoing situations that still feel unsafe or overwhelming. My goal is to create a space of safety, choice, and compassion, where you don’t have to minimize what you’ve been through or pretend you’re “fine.”
I also care deeply about identity. When we don’t have a clear sense of who we are, it’s hard to know where we fit or what to do next. A big part of therapy with me is helping you get to know yourself more fully: your values, your strengths, your story, and the kind of life you want to build.
Faith, Brain Health, and the Bigger Picture
I’m deeply interested in brain health and how our thoughts, habits, relationships, and spiritual life all interact. I love helping clients understand what’s happening in their brain and nervous system so they can see themselves as human, not broken—and more empowered to change.
As a faith-based counselor, my Christian faith quietly shapes how I see people: created with purpose, deeply loved, and never beyond hope. The name Heart & Vine comes from John 15, where Jesus calls Himself the Vine and God the Gardener. That picture reminds me that we’re not meant to do life—or healing—on our own.
For clients who want it, I’m glad to integrate faith and spirituality into sessions through things like prayer, Scripture, or simply exploring where God might be in your story. For clients who don’t, that’s completely okay too. I welcome people from all backgrounds and beliefs, and you’ll never be pressured to share or adopt my faith. Our work will always center on your goals and what matters most to you.
Who I Work With
I work with individuals ages 10 and up (children/teens and adults). Some of the concerns I often help with include:
Anxiety and chronic stress
Trauma and post-traumatic stress
Life transitions and big changes
Identity, self-worth, and “Who am I?” questions
Faith and spirituality concerns
Depression and mood struggles
Grief, loss, and feeling stuck
For teens, I collaborate with parents/guardians as needed while still protecting the teen’s privacy and sense of safety in therapy. I do not currently provide couples or full-family counseling, but I’m happy to coordinate with parents and other supports when it’s helpful and appropriate.
A Bit About Me
Outside of the counseling room, I’m a big fan of strategy, board, and card games, all things racing-related, and basketball. I love spending time with my twin daughters and finding small, everyday moments of joy with my family. I’m also really drawn to plants, gardening, and nature—the way roots grow slowly, seasons change, and new life can show up in places that once looked empty.
I’m a lifelong learner and love keeping up with research, new modalities, and creative tools that support healing and growth. Long-term, I hope to offer groups, workshops, and trainings, and eventually pursue a PhD so I can teach, research, and write in the areas of mental health, faith, and neuroscience.
At Heart & Vine Counseling and Wellness, my hope is that you feel safe, welcomed, and genuinely cared for. Whether you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, disconnected, or healing from painful experiences, I would be honored to walk alongside you—with a smile on my face and a song in my heart—as you work toward deeper roots, healthier brain patterns, and a more grounded sense of hope.
